How to update Garmin map for nuvi42LM
What they do not tell you when you buy the Garmin nuvi42LM are these:
a) You have to update the maps with an unlock code from the Garmin map load page.Google that for your country. If you are in Japan, it is unlikely you have a Garmin. If you are planning to go there with your Garmin, forget it . So where do you find the unlock code ? You need to go to the back of your device behind the gadget that support the garmin when you drive.
b) There you will find a very miniscule serial number, where the 2 will look like a Z, so you got to guess your number.
c) Thereafter you will get an unlock code.
d) After you downloaded the right map , remember you need to remember what model you Garmin is because the update page is a jungle and badly written. If you do not have your model eg 42LM etc, then you will download the wrong map !
e)Upon downloading the map, make sure that it is downloaded to your drive and not into your Garmin device as it is at least 300 Megabyte space.
f) There you will run the executable file which will overwrite your existing file under the Map folder. Make sure that you have a backup of that. Because they will tell you that it is not necessary to backup. If all else works fine, then that is true, but if your system crashes or the file gets corrupted during the update, you can still copy this file over under the MAP folder.
g) After updating, go back to the Garmin setting, and check for the version of the map under Info. It should contain the latest version and has a check ticked.
You are all set.
